Working in highly competitive, target driven environments can make people feel inadequate, anxious and overwhelmed. These factors can contribute to decreased performance and may lead to burnout. Mental health issues are currently the primary cause of sickness absence in the UK. In an independent review of mental health and employers, it was found that around half of all long-term sick leave in the UK is due to stress, depression and anxiety (Stevenson & Farmer, 2017). Furthermore, it has been found that, 95% of employees who call into work sick with stress give a different reason to their employers as to why they are unwell, suggesting that there is still huge stigma attached to disclosing difficulties to do with mental health (Time to Change, 2019).

Given this context, prioritising mental health in the corporate world is more important than ever. I am a strong and dedicated advocate for fighting the stigma against mental health and creating a compassionate, supportive and understanding culture in corporate organisations.
